life around LAP

For a break from the scientific work, you just have to step outside the building. Our MPQ and LMU research sites are set amidst charming landscape close by the river Isar, which flows down from the Alps to the north. Open countryside borders the science and research campus of Garching on the south side. All around the site there are opportunities for leisure pursuits such as cycling, jogging or walking, and plenty of space for freeing the mind and coming up with new ideas. A visit to the many other institutes on the campus to look at their work in the field of natural sciences is also a great way to gather inspiration − highlights include the 'ix-quadrat' mathematics museum in the information science building and the Faculty of Engineering of the Technical University of Munich.
If it's the city lights that you want, a 20-minute trip on the underground railway (U6) will take you from the campus to the heart of Munich, which offers an almost limitless choice of leisure and cultural activities. The gallery of images on these pages gives you an impression of what the institute and the campus look like and what there is to do in your spare time in and around Munich.
