Distinguished visitors at the Laboratory for Attosecond Physics. The Board of Governors of Wellcome Trust payed a visit at our laboratories at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität and the Max-Planck Institute of Quantum Optics. The visitors were informed about how molecular spectrometry can benefit from ultrafast metrology to detect diseases in blood at an early stage. Afterwards, Prof. Ferenc Krausz, Matthew Weidman, Ioachim Pupeza and Mihaela Zigman showed them the laboratories.
The Wellcome Trust supports researchers around the world, exploring fundamental questions about health and disease. The Trust is named after the pharmacist, entrepreneur, philanthropist and collector Sir Henry Wellcome. He died in 1936. On his death, his will established a charity for "the advancement of medical and scientific research to improve mankind's wellbeing". Wellcome wanted the charity to use the profits from the company to advance medical research and its history. These questions are wide-ranging – from how our brains function, to how infections like HIV and TB are spread, to how our experience of disease is affected by gender and ethnicity.
